Consider this problem from the PCA:


A ball is thrown into a lake, creating a circular ripple that travels outward at a speed of 5 cm per second.  Express the area, A, of the circle in terms of the number of seconds, s, that have passed since the ball hits the lake.


Discuss how this problem might be treated instructionally in typical Japanese, German, and U.S. classrooms. Base your discussions on what you learned from The Teaching Gap. Please go into sufficient detail to differentiate the treatments, but do not feel obliged to provide anything like lesson plans.
