1)    Katie and Kimberly are going to go to a Halloween festival.  There are two major  festivals to choose from:  Boo Fest 2006 or AZ Scare-fest.  Boo Fest charges $10 to get in plus $3 per ride.  AZ Scare-fest charges $18 to get in, but only $1 per ride.

 

a)     Write an expression that relates the total cost at Boo Fest and the number of rides that each girl rides

 

 

b)    Write an expression that relates the total cost at AZ Scare-fest and the number of rides that each girl rides.

 

 

c)     Which festival will be cheaper if the girls plan on riding 4 rides each?

 

 

d)    Write an equation that represents the number of rides the girls must ride in order for both festivals to cost the same?

 

 

e)     What will it mean to find a solution to the above equation?

2)    Ami Lyn and her friends are going trick or treating tomorrow.  Unfortunately, they left without one of their friends!!! The girls started trick or treating, going at a rate of 3 houses per minute.  The friend they left behind left 10 minutes later and walked at a rate of 5 houses per minute trying to catch up. 

 

a)     Write an expression that relates how many houses Ami and her friends have gone with the number of minutes gone by.

 

 

b)    Write an expression that relates how many houses their friend has gone to with the number of minutes gone by.

 

 

c)     Write an equation that represents when the friend will have caught up to Ami and the other girls

 

 

d)    Solve the equation and say what your answer represents
