Math Topics 3 and 4
Instructor: Chuck
Weeks
Room Number: P402 1st hour
Phone: 480-632-4750
e-mail: charles_weeks@gilbert.k12.az.us
Office Hours: By appointment. IF YOU NEED HELP ASK FOR IT!!! I am generally able to respond to
voicemails and e-mails within 24 hours, and many times the same day. Grades can be found anytime on
SnapGrades.
Attendance: Attendance is
required during every scheduled class period. If a student has an excused absence, all work must be made
up.
Materials: Separate three-ring notebook, paper, and pencil. You will also need
1.
a straightedge
2.
a compass
3.
a protractor
4.
a plastic pencil sleeve to hold the above (we will
provide all of 1-4, but you must replace them if lost).
A calculator is not required for class. You will keep all assignments in your
binder, and turn in the binder periodically for a grade.
Homework: Expect a
homework assignment every day. We
will review the homework in class, and turn in the entire weekÕs homework
assignment on FRIDAY. Our homework assignments will be posted at http://tpc2.net/math34/
Makeup Work: It is the studentÕs responsibility to check the URL
listed above to receive assignments missed while absent. I will deduct points for late work turned
in beyond the number of days absent.
For special circumstances (sometimes the dog really does eat the
homework!), please see me.
Tardiness:
In
accordance with school policy, students must be in their seats when the
start-of-period bell sounds. Any
student late to class will be counted tardy unless they have a pass. Consistent tardy behavior will be
handled in accordance with the classroom discipline plan. The 4th occurrence will
result in a conduct referral to the administration. ANY STUDENT 10 MINUTES LATE TO CLASS WILL BE MARKED ABSENT.
Extra Credit: Extra
credit problems will be available as part of unit tests. At times, an extra credit problem may
be available once a unit. Few, if any, further extra credit assignments will be
offered so take advantage of the opportunities when they present themselves.
Grades:
Grades will
be calculated based on a percentage of total points possible for the entire
semester. Points will come from
the following: quizzes, tests,
class activities, and homework.
Students should expect a quiz roughly halfway through a chapter, and a
unit test every 2-3 weeks. In
addition there may be other assignments such as lab reports or projects that
will count for grades. The
semester grade will consist of 80% semester work, and 20% from a district-wide
semester final exam. In general, a
weekÕs worth of homework will count 25 points, a weekÕs worth of warm-up
problems will count 5 points, and problems on quizzes and tests will count from
2-5 points per problem. Letter
grades will be assigned as follows:
A:
100%-90%
B:
89%-80%
C:
79%-70%
D:
69%-60%
F: below
60%.
Class Policies: I believe in treating high school students like
young adults. All students will be
receiving MHS planner books, and will be attending school policy
presentations. Therefore, the
schoolÕs policies will be in effect in the classroom. Simply follow the Golden Rule and we wonÕt have any
problems.
Consequences:
1.
First
offense: verbal warning to the
student
2.
Second
offense: verbal warning with a
phone call home
3.
Third
offense: Referral to the office.
NOTE: If I determine the offense is of a particularly grievous
nature, I will immediately prepare a conduct referral to the office!
This syllabus may be altered at my discretion. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
