Day 2 - Clip 1
Exploring Speed From A Graph of Clown’s Walk
In day two of the lesson sequence, Ms. Coombs
re-visits Clown by focusing on a graph of
Clown’s walk showing his distance from start as
a function of time. She then asks the students
what they can determine about the speed of Clown
by looking at the graph. Symone focuses on the
quantities of distance and time by looking at
how many feet Clown travels in a certain amount
of time. Ryan then offers an answer that focuses
on the steepness of the line as an indication of
speed. Ms. Coombs highlights Ryan’s answer and
follows by asking students if they can use
Ryan’s method to determine the portion of the
graph where Clown was traveling fastest. This
discussion continues for the remainder of the
class.
